9:16 aspect ratio: dimensions for vertical video

Understand the shape behind vertical video, common pixel dimensions, and how to resize without distorting the frame.

What does 9:16 mean?

A 9:16 aspect ratio means the width is nine units for every sixteen units of height. It is a tall, portrait-shaped frame commonly used for full-screen short-form video. A common resolution is 1080 × 1920 pixels, but any dimensions with the same ratio can work when supported by the platform and export workflow.

1080 ÷ 1920 = 0.5625 = 9 ÷ 16

These are common examples, not a guarantee of platform acceptance for every upload. Confirm the current requirements for your destination and consider the source quality before upscaling.

How to calculate a matching dimension

To find the height for a chosen width, multiply the width by 16 and divide by 9. To find the width for a chosen height, multiply the height by 9 and divide by 16.

Height = width × 16 ÷ 9
Width = height × 9 ÷ 16

Enter your dimensions in the aspect ratio calculator, or use the video resolution converter to calculate proportional output dimensions.

Convert landscape video to vertical

Changing a 16:9 landscape video to 9:16 cannot preserve the entire frame and fill the vertical canvas at the same time. You must crop/reframe the footage, place the landscape video inside a vertical background, or use another layout. Do not stretch the frame to force a fit; people and objects will look distorted.

When adding titles or captions, leave room around the edges for interface controls. The vertical video safe zone preview can help plan a readable layout, but always check the actual destination app.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1080 × 1920 the same ratio as 9:16?

Yes. Dividing both numbers by 120 gives 9 × 16, so the ratio is exactly 9:16.

Can I resize 16:9 video into 9:16 without cropping?

You can fit the whole landscape frame inside a vertical canvas with empty space, but filling the canvas requires cropping or reframing.

Does a higher resolution always mean better quality?

No. Upscaling adds pixels but cannot restore detail that was not in the source. Source quality, bitrate, codec, and export settings also matter.
