What does a video crop calculator do?
It estimates the largest centered rectangle with a chosen aspect ratio that fits inside your source frame. For example, cropping a 1920 × 1080 landscape frame to 1:1 keeps a 1080 × 1080 square, removing 420 pixels from each horizontal side.
How the calculation works
If the source is wider than the target shape, the crop keeps the full source height and calculates width as height × target ratio. If the source is taller or narrower than the target, it keeps the full width and calculates height as width ÷ target ratio. Pixel dimensions are rounded to whole numbers.
Crop or resize?
Cropping removes parts of the frame to change its shape. Proportional resizing changes the pixel dimensions while keeping the same shape. Stretching changes the shape of objects and should usually be avoided. Read video crop vs resize for examples, or use the video resolution converter to resize without changing the ratio.
Frequently asked questions
Does this crop my video file?
No. It calculates crop dimensions only. Apply the crop in your video editor and adjust the crop position to keep important content visible.
Why is the crop centered?
A centered crop gives a reproducible estimate without knowing where the subject is. Real footage may need a custom crop position.
Can I crop landscape video to vertical?
Yes, but a 9:16 crop from a 16:9 source removes much of the left and right sides. Check the composition before exporting.
